Using Compressed Air in Directional and Horizontal Drilling

Compressed air is everywhere. Portable diesel air compressors bring compressed air wherever it is needed: plantside, roadside, refineryside and many other jobsites.

This month’s feature application is using portable air compressors in directional and horizontal drilling.

In this application, high volume and high pressure is required, making the Sullair 900XHH/1150XH a good fit. However, underground utility contactors – such as water, cable, fiber and natural gas – will sometimes use higher volume/higher pressure compressor packages for a horizontal shot. As an example, the Ditch Witch JT10 drill package is ideal with the Sullair 400HH compressor. Vermeer is another company who provides these drill packages. In areas with a large presence of underground rock, contractors will use air actuated hammers to complete the shot.
