Columbia Pulp is North America’s first tree-free market pulp mill, using wheat farmers’ waste straw to create pulp for paper products. They also produce bio-polymers for a variety of industrial uses ranging from de-icing agents to animal feed additives.

In October 2019, Columbia Pulp opened a new, $250 million straw pulp mill located on the Lyons Ferry Site outside of Starbuck, Washington, and compressed air is an important part of its operation.

Without compressors, everything stops, said Larry Tantalo, Project Manager with Columbia Pulp. Nothing moves without compressed air in our plant.

With operations running 24/7/365, producing nearly 400 tons of pulp each day, Columbia Pulp needed a reliable and durable compressed air solution. They determined Sullair was the best fit and rely on two Sullair S-energy® 75 hp lubricated rotary screw air compressors and a Sullair desiccant dryer.

Each day the compressors help turn a waste product into a valuable paper grade pulp, which is sold to paper mills for consumer products, tissues and food service products. The compressed air is used in a large industrial machine to squeeze water out of thick sheets of pulp.

We plan to be around 40 years, so we want to make the folks who support us will be around with us, said Tantalo. We know they [Sullair and distributor Northwest Pump] have that kind of reputation.
